If you're like me, you're a loser. So here are some songs for the great loser within us all.
Welcome to Your Life // Grouplove
From Grouplove's latest album, this song encourages us to embrace the fact we (and are lives) are a "big mess". I regularly preach how much of a hot mess I am. I am constantly forgetting things, running late (with no good excuse), procrastinating until the last possible second, tripping over/under/up/down, breaking things, and over sharing my feelings. But why fret over how crappy things are going when it's also what makes things exciting? Even when life feels like a string (read: series) of "unfortunate events", if everything went as planned, where would the fun in that be? But things can also be really fun and exciting with no string attached, too. Like your career goals and dreams can become a reality. This is a great, positive anthem for that IDGAF attitude. After all, what makes us a mess, also makes us charming.
Agora // Bears Hands (cw: possible phobia stigmatization)
Sometimes, we (meaning me) will make plans and cross our fingers that those said plans will get cancelled. You know when you just wanna chill? But also the feeling when you wanna hang out with people and they want to stay home? The luck! Re: cw- this song only states the pre-fix of "agora", mostly as painting a parallel to the relationship of the artist and the subject, but it also mentions pills; common misconception with some phobias/fears is that they aren't as important or serious as "mainstream" mental disorders and illnesses, but quite the contrary. Just thought that disclaimer is important to put out there, just in case.
Hoodie On // Matt & Kim
Honestly, I recently purchased my first hoodie since middle school, and I have to admit: I have been missing out. Wow. This hoodie has changed my life! I also got bleach stains all over it within a week, but I plan to replace it so I can go out in public (hoodie in question is black). Anywhooo, the song bumps. Do everything with a hoodie on; not just literally, but with a hoodie on kind of attitude. If you wear a hoodie while listening to this song, (esp. when you're....in a "good mood") the beat and meta-ness will make you feel things.
What's My Age Again // blink-182 (BIG CW: misogyny, homophobia, sexism, white cishet patriachal B.S.)
If you know early blink-182, these lyrics won't shock you, but admittingly, they are the epitome of toxic masculinity in punk music. THAT BEING SAID, if you are immature, or don't pick up on social cues, or have the habit of making offensive jokes, or can't be serious, this song is for you. (very "everything sucks and i'm just trying to live" punk
No Waves // FIDLAR (cw: substance abuse)
These lyrics-though arguably, simplifies drug addiction-speaks to being lazy, unproductive, but also helpless. If you have bad (self destructive) habits, that could be worse, but still aren't great to begin with, this song speaks to that. If you find yourself trying to pass the time or life with a little "something something", this song also speaks to that.
I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl // Wavves
What is happening? What even? What is life?Who doesn't wanna meet Dave Grohl? (I can already hear you say: "me" or "who?"
Houdini // Foster the People
When it feels like the world is pitted against you, and you're always defending yourself, seeking validation and respect, you might want to disappear, too. But remember: you are destined for greatness, friend.
Young Blood // The Districts
Constantly falling short, not meeting your own expectations, and feeling pathetic.
The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth // Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Very descriptive of feelings and situations we'd rather not be in. Feeling awkward and detached, wanting to go away. These lyrics are very much a stream of consciousness.
Scar Tissue // Red Hot Chili Peppers
I don't have to explain this one.
Ironic // Alanis Morissette
So as you may already know, only about a third of the situations in this song are ACTUALLY ironic; most of them are just bad coincidences/moments that suck. When it seems like everything that can go wrong goes wrong and you find yourself saying "why does all this sh*t happen to me", this song will soothe you as you scream the lyrics at 2AM on a Saturday night (Sunday morning).
Everything is Embarrassing // Sky Ferreira
I recently discovered this old(er) Sky Ferreira song, and she always manages to make sucky things really cool. Sometimes (read: siempre) I feel, like a walking embarrassment. Like this is me. This is my life. And when it comes to human interests, and being intrigued by a person, this is highly relatbale. (Imagine: "Notice Me Horton" but a little more punk)
Boys Don't Cry // The Cure
Honestly, I cry to this song and I think that says it all.
Creep // Radiohead
Tough Guy // Cyberbully Mom Club
Pessimistic. Introverted. Queer.
Be Your Own 3 A.M. // Adult Mom
When you come home from a diy-punk basement show -that you attended alone- to be alone at home, yet again, and crawl into the covers with some snacks, wearing only your underwear and socks. This is that. Don't be fooled by the seemingly hetero lyrics, this artist is queer.* (by "you" I mean "me", obvs. Unless this is you, too then praise)
Being a loser sucks a lot of the time, but it's also so much fun.
Enjoy these tunes,
